Catfish Farmers Want More Help

By Alabama Public Radio

Undated – The Catfish Farmers of America says a recent trade ruling designed to help their industry really isn't doing that much. They say imports from Vietnam are gaining more ground over the domestic catfish market. The government placed trade restrictions on Vietnamese imports a couple of years ago. But domestic producers say in reality, sales continue to go up because the foreign fish is less expensive. Hugh Warren says his group wants imported fish to carry a country of origin label. The Catfish Farmers of America also wants better enforcement to ensure Vietnamese fish are not falsely labeled as catfish. Alabama has a 500 million dollar a year catfish industry.
