Montgomery AL – A bill that would set up an oversight commission for the state's indigent legal defense program is under consideration in the Statehouse. That commission would ensure poor defendants get adequate representation and that attorneys are held accountable for their work and the amount of money they spend. The Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association opposes the measure saying it gives too much power to one body and it would not ensure defense attorneys are paid fairly. Indigent defense has been a controversial subject since February of last year when Attorney General Troy King issued an advisory opinion that cut overhead pay for lawyers. A lawsuit over the issue is now pending before the Alabama Supreme Court.
