west Alabama – Damage assessment teams are still reviewing the aftermath of Thursday's severe weather. Several counties reported significant damage as a line of strong thunderstorms swept through. So far there has been no evidence of tornadoes. National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Linhares says the damage appears to have been caused by straight line winds of up to 80 miles per hour. Damage was reported in Fayette, Marion, Walker, Winston and Lamar County. Lamar County took to brunt of the storm. Several buildings including the Vernon Elementary School, had their roofs blown off. Alabama Power reported almost 21 thousand people across the state lost electricity. There is a slight chance of severe thunderstorms Friday evening and this weekend. The possibility of severe weather will also rise again on Monday.
