Attalla, AL – There are still more than eight million scrap tires sitting in the state's largest tire dump. It's located in Attalla in Etowah County. The state says cleanup won't begin until this summer, though. There have been several delays in the state's effort to find qualified contractors to do the job. A state Department of Environmental Management spokesman says contractors who are interested in the job have less than three weeks to apply to become an approved contractor. Only the names on the approved list can bid on scrap tire projects. The Attalla tire dump is the first targeted for clean up under the state's Scrap Tire Environmental Quality Act.
