Governor Signing Bills

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery AL – Governor Bob Riley is in the process of signing into law bills approved during the legislative session that ended early yesterday morning. Today Riley was at the Chilton Research and Extension Center to sign a bill that names the peach as Alabama's official tree fruit. The Governor is also expected to sign a bill that changes Alabama's presidential primary to February. The bill has widespread support ... unless you happen to be from Mobile, where the primary falls on Tuesday the 5th the same day as Fat Tuesday. Some local officials say it will be a logistical nightmare trying to coordinate poll workers, voters and the final day of Mardi Gras. About 250-thousand people celebrated Mardi Gras this year in downtown Mobile.
