Case Against School Board Member Begins

By Alabama Public Radio

Mobile, AL – Opening statements are scheduled for Thursday in the impeachment trial of Mobile County school board member David Thomas Junior. He's accused of spending nine thousand dollars on Mardi Gras throws, including stuffed animals, beads, Moon Pies and cups, and charging it to the school system without authorization. Last month, a Mobile County grand jury recommended Thomas be impeached on several charges. The grand jury also issued an indictment charging Thomas with six felonies in connection with the purchases. Jury screening began Monday, and the 12 jurors and two alternates were seated yesterday at Mobile County circuit court. Thomas would be removed from office if convicted of the charges.
