Tuscaloosa Air Among the Cleanest

By Alabama Public Radio

Tuscaloosa AL – The American Lung Association's annual report on air pollution shows Tuscaloosa has some of the cleanest air in the nation, while Birmingham has some of the filthiest. A state environmental official says Birmingham's poor air quality can be attributed to pollution from autos and industry. Another reason is the city's geography. Birmingham lies in a valley where stagnant air can collect. However, the magic city has made strides in improving air quality in recent years. Tuscaloosa doesn't have the same combination of industry, vehicles and geography. There are also enough miles between the two cities to prevent the air pollution in Birmingham from drifting to Tuscaloosa.
