Inmate Death Under Investigation

By Alabama Public Radio

Limestone County AL – Alabama prison officials are investigating an early morning homicide at Limestone Correctional Facility. So far, authorities believe the inmate, 52-year-old Peter Makres was strangled inside a segregation cell. Makres was resident of Jefferson County, and was serving a 20-year sentence for sex-related offenses. Inmate Joseph Lee Burns is being investigated as a suspect, but no charges have been filed. Burns is serving a 20-year sentence out of Lauderdale County for theft, rape and sodomy. A prison spokesperson says both inmates have previous disciplinary citations. Investigators will turn over their findings to the Limestone County district attorney for possible prosecution.
