Washington, DC – The federal Justice Department is suing the state again. This time, the department says Alabama missed the deadline for creating a statewide computerized database of voters for this year's elections. The suit asks a judge to require the state to develop the plan within the next month and to make sure Alabama's voter rolls are accurate for the upcoming elections. The suit is the second elections-related lawsuit the Justice Department has filed against the state this year. The first suit said there wasn't enough time between the primary and runoff elections to allow soldiers overseas to get their ballots back in time to be counted. The Legislature then passed a law to delay the runoffs by three weeks.
