Washington, DC – Federal agriculture officials spent seven weeks trying to track the origins of an Alabama cow that was infected with mad cow disease. But the government didn't have any luck, so they wrapped up the investigation. Workers looked at more than three dozen farms, and in Alabama, the Food and Drug Administration reviewed local feed mills. The F-D-A said the mills complied with the ban on using cattle remains in feed. Even though no one seems to know where the cow came from, the U-S-D-A's chief veterinarian says Americans and their animals are protected from mad cow disease by a series of safeguards.
