Lawsuit Costs State $250,000

By Alabama Public Radio

Mongtomery AL – The state will pay a 250-thousand dollar settlement as a result of a lawsuit filed against Secretary of State Nancy Worley. Former assistant Attorney General Charles Grainger Junior had worked for the state for 18 years until fired in 2003, when Worley took office. He says he was fired in violation of religious and free speech standards for praying while at work with a fellow employee who had a serious medical condition. Grainger's part of the settlement is 150-thousand dollars. The state will also pay 101-thousand dollars to his attorneys. Worley has not commented on the matter.
