Witness Claims Campaign Ties

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery AL – Former Governor Don Siegelman's trial continued today with a cross examination of toll bridge developer Jim Allen. Allen testified that Siegelman promised him he could pick the state's next transportation director if he contributed 40-thousand dollars to Siegelman's 1998 campaign for governor. Allen says he eventually gave the campaign contribution, and when Siegelman was elected, Mac Roberts ... one of the co-defendants ... was appointed transportation director. Roberts was working for Allen at the time and had been transportation director under former Governor Jim Folsom, Junior. The trial ended early today and will take three days off for the Memorial Day weekend.
