Brewton, AL – Only four inmates at a time will be allowed out of their cells at the Escambia County jail. Authorities placed 37 inmates on lockdown Monday after an hour-long melee. Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith says the fight started when an inmate taunted an officer. A confrontation followed, and other inmates began getting rowdy. They smashed a T-V and other equipment until more back-up officers arrived about an hour later. The sheriff says the cell doors that were not locking properly at the jail have been repaired. He also says he's proud of how the officers handled the incident.
