Mobile, AL – At 11:30 this morning, Governor Bob Riley is expected to announce whether he plans to support a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal. The project was proposed by ConocoPhillips and would be constructed 12 miles south of Dauphin Island. The terminal would use billions of gallons of seawater to convert the liquified gas for commercial sale. Environmental and conservation groups have urged a veto, citing potential damage to marine life. Those concerns sparked Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco to veto an offshore L-N-G project in her state ... a veto Riley supports. A ConocoPhillips spokesperson says planning for the project has been expensive, and a veto would require starting over. Two other LNG terminals are also in the works of the coast of Mississippi.
