Rileys Seeks Drought Aid For Farmers

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery AL – Summer began Wednesday, but the effects of hot weather have already taken a toll of some farmers. Governor Bob Riley says Alabama has seen one of its driest Springs ever, which has damaged crops and livestock. Riley sent a letter federal agriculture officials requesting a disaster declaration. That would allow farmers to apply for low-interest loans through the federal government. It would also allow farmers to receive other types of emergency assistance. Most of the worst damage has occurred in the southeastern and eastern portions of Alabama.
