Montgomery, AL – Wednesday is the fifth day of deliberations for jurors in the government corruption trial of former Governor Don Siegelman and three others. In the 32-day trial, prosecutors claimed government favors were traded for campaign donations and gifts during Siegelman's terms as lieutenant governor and governor.
Prosecutors have asked a federal judge to change the answer he gave to a question from jurors. Jurors had asked how they should view a campaign contribution in a bribery charge. The judge did not call jurors back for further instructions on that question.
Siegelman attorney Vince Kilborn says prosecutors filed a sealed motion asking Federal Judge Mark Fuller to explain to jurors that they do not have to find that Siegelman received any personal benefit from campaign contributions.
Chief prosecutor Louis Franklin says he cannot say anything about the motion because it is sealed. He also criticized defense attorneys for commenting on it.
