Birmingham, AL – About three dozen activists celebrated the closing of a Birmingham abortion clinic that surrendered its license.
Summit Medical Center gave up its license rather than fight state charges that a worker was improperly allowed to perform an abortion without a doctor being present.
The Alabama Department of Public Health canceled a hearing on the matter after the clinic gave up its license and closed.
State Attorney General Troy King has said his office would investigate the abortion clinic.
Activists gathered outside the Center Wednesday, where they prayed for the women and unborn children who had passed through its doors.
They also promised to keep fighting to close Birmingham's two remaining abortion clinics.
Sanctity of Life Ministries founder Jim Pinto says he and others will not stop until the city is abortion free.
Abortion rights supporters called the closing an unfortunate blow to women.
