Undated, AL – A new child safety seat law will take effect Saturday. It will require children to be placed in rear-facing car seats until they are one year old or weigh 20 pounds. Children must sit in forward-facing car seats until they are five years old or weigh 40 pounds, and they'll have to sit in a booster seat until they turn six. The change also targets older children and young teenagers. They'll be required to wear a regular seat belt -- even while riding in rear seats -- until they turn 15. State law only requires all front-seat occupants to wear seat belts. The new law covers passenger cars, pickup trucks, vans with seating capacity for ten or less, minivans and sport utility vehicles.
