School Board Will Change Naming Policy

By Alabama Public Radio

Huntsville, AL – The Huntsville city school board is changing its policy on naming fields and facilities. It happened Thursday night when board member Topper Birney asked the board to name Huntsville High School's new soccer field after Stephanie Boyd. She scored the most goals in the history of varsity soccer at Huntsville High -- 117. She graduated in May but died in a car accident a week before she was to go to Auburn University. The board's policy, though, doesn't allow such an honor. It states that parts of a school or property are to be named after an outstanding civic or educational leader or a group of local, state or national prominence. The person or persons must be retired or deceased, but the policy also states the honoree should have been either a school employee or a school volunteer. Superintendent Ann Roy Moore has asked the staff to write a new policy.
