Lowndes County Landfill Debate Re-ignites

By Alabama Public Radio

Lowndes County AL – A battle over another proposed landfill in Lowndes County is simmering. Alabama River Partners is seeking a permit to build a three-phase economic development along the banks of the Alabama River that would include a sand/gravel mine, an inland port, and a landfill, which would accept construction and demolition debris. The plan comes after a group of area residents recently fought and won to block a landfill near the historic Selma-to-Montgomery Voting Rights Trail. A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for July 24th, when the Lowndes County Commission will consider whether to issue a permit for the project.
