Anniston AL – Stormy weather over the weekend caused officials at the Anniston Chemical Weapons Disposal Facility to delay a restart of its incinerator. The incinerator was shut down in March to be reconfigured to dispose of VX munitions. On Thursday, the aging VX rockets were moved from their storage igloos to a holding area. Equipment was tested on Friday, but thunderstorms scrubbed the restart. VX-filled rockets account for about 46 percent of the remaining weapons stockpile at the Anniston Army Depot. Mortar and artillery shells, and one-ton containers of blister agent account for the other 54 percent. Since 2003, more than 142-thousand out of around 600-thousand chemical munitions have been destroyed. The incineration effort is scheduled for completion by late 2010.
