Cheney Visits Sparks Sharp Remarks

By Alabama Public Radio

Dothan AL – There were some sharp comments from Alabama's two major gubernatorial candidates regarding vice president Dick Cheney's fundraising visit to Dothan yesterday. The 5-thousand dollar per couple dinner was expected to raise nearly 250-thousand dollars for Governor Bob Riley's re-election campaign. Riley says his opponent Democratic Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley should be concerned of the show of support he has in her home county. Baxley says most people in Houston County couldn't even think about affording a ticket to the fundraiser, calling it the "ultimate overkill to show how you big dog it over country folks." Both candidates claim ties to rural roots. Cheney did not make any public remarks.
