Shoal Creek Mine Reopens

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – More than 600 coal miners are back working at the Shoal Creek mine. It had been shut down since a fire and roof collapse on February 24th. State and federal inspectors have cleared the mine to resume production. The Shoal Creek mine is about 45 miles west of Birmingham. It's the state's biggest mine and is also one of the largest in the nation. It produced two-point-two million tons of coal last year.
