Birmingham, AL – The federal minimum wage of five dollars-15 cents an hour could more than double for city workers in Birmingham if a recent proposal is approved. The Alabama Alliance for a Living Wage, a coalition of unions, churches and advocates for the poor, has proposed setting the minimum wage at no less than 150 percent of the federal poverty figure for a family of three without insurance. That's 11 dollars, 60 cents per hour. The increase would affect municipal employees and certain other workers in the Birmingham area. The measure would have to be approved by the mayor and City Council to become law.
