Tuscaloosa Car Ordinance Takes Effect Soon

By Associated Press

Tuscaloosa, AL – Selling a car in Tuscaloosa is about to get a little harder thanks to a new city ordinance that restricts the sale of vehicles on private property. Starting Wednesday it will be illegal for anyone to place a vehicle for sale unless he or she owns the vehicle AND the property where it's parked. But a person can still sell just one car at a time. Penalties for violating the ordinance range from fines of up to $200 and possibly even 60 days in jail per violation. The ordinance was passed unanimously by the City Council Thursday night and is intended to clean up impromptu used car lots that have sprung up on vacant properties. The move is intended to keep makeshift lots from competing with licensed car dealers. Some critics say the city goes too far in restricting land owners from allowing others to sell cars on their private property.
