Montgomery, AL – Homeland security officials are encouraging Alabamians to attend the state's "Be Ready Day" in Huntsville to learn about preparing for disasters and emergencies. The event will be held Thursday at the U-S- Space and Rocket Center and is part of the federal Homeland Security Department's National Preparedness Month. This year's focus is on family emergency preparedness, but the event will also highlight volunteer opportunities and give first responders a chance to demonstrate their capabilities. Alabama Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tracey Ayres said 80 sixth-graders were selected to participate in the inaugural "Be Ready Camp" in Alabama. The four-day camp started yesterday and will wrap up Thursday when Governor Bob Riley presents each of the participants with a certificate of completion.
