Auburn, AL – Small engine maker Briggs and Stratton is laying off two-hundred workers at its Auburn plant. Managers blamed the downsizing on lower demand for its generators and excessive inventory. Dave DeBaets, vice president and general manager, said employees were informed Friday. He said most of those affected are machinists and assembly line workers. DaBaets said a plant in Rolla, Missouri, is also reducing its work force. Briggs and Stratton opened in Auburn's industrial park in 1995 and employs approximately 950 people.
