Gee's Bend, AL – It's long been rumored that ferry service to the community of Gees Bend in Wilcox County was suspended in 1962 to hamper efforts by civil rights demonstrators. For more than 44 years, access across the Alabama River remained lost. But earlier this month, ferry service was finally restored, and that has raised hopes for building new economic connections between communities in Wilcox County. Linda Vise, the tourism director for the Alabama-Tombigbee Regional Commission recently rode the ferry for the first time. She spoke with Alabama Public Radio's Brett Tannehill about her trip.
