New Deadline in Corruption Case

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – A federal judge has given prosecutors until Friday to respond to a motion asking that two of the jurors who convicted former Governor Don Siegelman and former HealthSouth C-E-O Richard Scrushy not be allowed to destroy any computers, computer records, cell phones or records of cell phone calls and text messaging. The pending motion, filed last Friday, cites e-mails written by at least three jurors discussing the case before a verdict was reached, in violation of U-S District Judge Mark Fuller's instructions. Siegelman's attorney Vince Kilborn said he is encouraged by the judge's order. Chief prosecutor Louis Franklin said prosecutors will respond to the motion by Friday, but said he is not sure if they would oppose preserving the computer records. Prosecutors also have until Friday to file a response to the new trial motion. Siegelman and Scrushy were found guilty June 29th on bribery and conspiracy charges after a two-month federal court trial in Montgomery. A sentencing date has not been scheduled for Siegelman and Scrushy.
