Sniper May Elude Montgomery Murder Trial

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – An attempt by sniper Lee Boyd Malvo to reach a universal plea deal with prosecutors may keep him from facing a murder trial in Montgomery. Lawyers for the 21-year-old Malvo announced Tuesday that they are seeking a plea agreement that would allow their client to plead guilty to all shootings to which he and his one-time mentor, John Allen Muhammad, have been linked. That could include the September 21st, 2002 shootings of state A-B-C Board employees Claudine Parker and Kellie Adams that started the pair's bloody rampage. The 52-year-old Parker was slain outside a liquor store in midtown Montgomery where both women worked. Adams, now 28, was disabled by the shooting. But its unclear if the deal would include the Montgomery shootings. Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks said she is prepared to prosecute Malvo and Muhammad in Parker's death. She said she has heard media reports of the possible plea deal, but has not been contacted by prosecutors in Maryland or Virginia. Malvo formally pleaded guilty Tuesday to six Maryland murders. He's already serving a life sentence in Virginia. Muhammad has been convicted in Maryland and Virginia and is on Virginia's death row.
