Ship Remnants May Be From Civil War Era

By Associated Press

Fort Morgan, AL – The remnants of an old vessel found on a Baldwin County beach could be from the Civil War, according to some archaeologists and maritime historians in south Alabama. The wooden ship's bow was uncovered by high tides and waves last week. It's located a few miles east of Fort Morgan. The vessel is estimated to be about 150 feet long and more than thirty feet wide. One expert thinks it could be that of a Civil War blockade runner because some of the wood is charred. There is speculation the ship could have been burned by the Union Navy during the battle of Mobile in 1862 or could have run aground. The discovery could take experts months to study. The ship has attracted numerous visitors to the site.
