Florence, AL – Authorities opened an arson investigation into a fire that damaged the sanctuary of the Salvation Army Church in Florence. Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly said the fire was being investigated as arson. Firefighters were called to the church around three a-m- Saturday on a report of smoke coming from the building. Police detective Sergeant Rolando Bogran said there was evidence of forced entry at the side door leading to the church area. It was unclear if anything was taken. The F-B-I joined the investigation. Florence F-B-I agent Dan Grisch said agents will be involved until a civil rights violation or a hate crime is ruled out as the motive for the fire. Salvation Army Captain Bill Mockabee said there was no damage to the residential area, which is at the back of the church building. The Salvation Army provides shelter for the homeless. Yesterday's service was held on the church lawn. Mockabee says the church usually has about 50 people for Sunday services.
