Selma, AL – Leaders in Selma are seeking a state and federal investigation into what they say was an apparent plot to assassinate the city's police chief. A 22-year-old man and a juvenile were arrested recently on charges of breaking into the apartment of Selma Police Chief Jimmy Martin. He was out of town at the time. But authorities say the two admitted they had been waiting for Martin to return, and had a sawed-off shotgun. The gun hasn't been located, and the two were gone by the time Martin returned. The chief wasn't hurt. Councilman Cecil Williamson is asking for a review of the case by state and federal agents. In part, the council wants to determine the origins of an Internet site that reportedly published the police chief's address.
