Montgomery, AL – Two key witnesses in the case that led to the convictions of former Gov. Don Siegelman and former HealthSouth chief Richard Scrushy are headed to federal prison. A judge in Montgomery has sentenced lobbyist and landfill developer Lanny Young to two-years in prison and fined him $25,000. He was also ordered to serve three-years supervised probation after his release from prison. Former Siegelman aide Nick Bailey was sentenced to 18 months in prison and three years supervised probation. But Bailey avoided a fine. A hearing will be held later to determine how much the two should pay in restitution.
Young testified for the government against Siegelman. He said he had an agreement with Bailey, Siegelman and Siegelman's former chief of staff to provide gifts and campaign donations in exchange for business favors from the Siegelman administration. Siegelman and Scrushy were convicted in June of bribery and conspiracy charges. Siegelman was convicted on a separate obstruction of justice charge. U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller ordered Young to report to prison on Jan. 9. Bailey was ordered to report to prison on April 17, but Fuller says that date could change because Bailey is still working with in other cases.
