Vestavia Hills, AL – Martha Farmer Brewer, the wife of Alabama's 49th governor Albert Brewer, died Wednesday at her home in Vestavia Hills. Born in Anniston the former Alabama first lady was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She met Albert Brewer while attending the University of Alabama. They were married for 56 years. Albert Brewer was elected lieutenant governor in 1966. He became governor when Gov. Lurleen Wallace died of cancer in 1968. Brewer only served as governor until January 1971. He lost a bitter battle for the 1970 Democratic gubernatorial nomination to George Wallace, who ran a very negative campaign. In 1969, while first lady, Mrs. Brewer compiled and edited the Alabama First Lady's Cookbook. She also turned a parlor in the governor's mansion into the First Ladies Parlor. To this day, a painting of each of the first ladies hangs there. Mrs. Brewer is survived by her husband Albert, two daughters, three grandchildren and one great granddaughter. After a private family burial, a memorial service will be held at Mountain Brook Baptist Church on Friday, November 17, at 10 AM.
