Young Girl Killed During Mobile Mardi Gras

By Associated Press

Mobile, AL – A young girl was hit by a car and killed during the Mardi Gras festivities in Mobile Tuesday, police said.

Mobile police spokesman Eric Gallichant said the girl was struck at the corner of Congress and Kennedy streets around 4:30 p.m., shortly after the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association Mammoth parade.

Prizes the girl had apparently caught during the parade beads, MoonPies and other things were left behind at the scene, the Mobile Press-Register reported.

Witnesses said a man in a beige Buick hit the girl and ran over her. The driver hit another car and ran off the road as he tried to flee.

Witnesses and some of the victim's relatives held the driver until police arrived. The girl was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Joshua Smith, 23, was taken into custody and charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Gallichant said additional charges are possible.
