Mardi Gras Draws Hundreds of Thousands

By Associated Press

Mobile, AL – Mobile's three-week Mardi Gras celebration drew an estimated 877,825 revelers, according to police estimates.

A crowd estimated at more than 105,000 attended the Fat Tuesday finale.

A child, five-year-old Jlexus Lee, was struck and killed by a car as she walked home from the parade yesterday. The driver, 23-year-old Joshua Smith, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of that accident.

Overall, however, police described the carnival as a safe holiday. The revelry resulted in more than 300 arrests, including 22 felony charges.
