Shoals Foundry Gets Scrapped

By Associated Press

Florence, AL – The Foundry of the Shoals made iron for household products like skillets for almost 115 years in Florence.

Today (2/27), the old factory is being sold for scrap. Built in 1888, the original foundry was a 150,000-square-foot industrial building.

The foundry has been closed since 2002, but Tim Roberson bought it three years ago with plans to use the plant.

The city blocked that idea, so the foundry remained dormant and began attracting vandals.

Roberson says he hasn't found anyone to rent the mill, so he's tearing it down and selling it for scrap. Demolition is supposed to be finished by late April.
