By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Legislature has begun its 2007 regular session.

House Speaker Seth Hammett gaveled the House into session at noon today (Tuesday) and Lieutenant Governor Jim Folsom Junior called the Senate to order at 12:01 p.m.

The regular session will continue for the next three and a half months.

The main duty of lawmakers will be to adopt spending plans for education and for state government. They are also expected to consider a bond issue to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on school construction and technology.

Lawmakers will also debate proposals to give pay raises to teachers and state government employees.
