Montgomery, AL – The Alabama House continued its efforts to reform the way election campaigns are financed.
The House voted 105 to nothing yesterday (Thursday) for a bill that requires disclosure of those paying for advertisements about a candidate. This would include material sent by mail and calls from a phone bank.
The sponsor, Representative Randy Hinshaw of Meridianville, says the bill is aimed at anonymous ads, phone calls and flyers that say disparaging things about a candidate.
Hinshaw says current Alabama law only requires financial disclosure for ads that specifically ask people to vote for a certain candidate.
The bill now goes to the Senate for debate.
