Mobile, AL – Aubrey D- Green, the former Alabama state senator whose leadership in the state senate led to the founding of the University of South Alabama died Thursday. He was 82.
He died following a brief illness, according to a statement from the University of South Alabama Foundation.
Green, of York, was a founding member and former chairman of the board of trustees of the University of South Alabama and a former president of the University of South Alabama Foundation. He was also a U-S Army combat veteran, having served in World War II.
Green, an automobile dealer, was elected in 1959 to the state senate, where he served until 1963. In 1963, he helped enact the legislation that established the University of South Alabama. From 1963 to 1993, he served on the university's board of trustees.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the York Baptist Church, with visitation from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. The family has requested donations be made to the USA Foundation for the Aubrey D. And Ellen Fulton Green Scholarship Fund.
