Washington, DC – Alabama Republicans Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions were on the losing end of the Senate's 51-to-47 vote Thursday to adopt a war spending bill that would require President Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq in the coming months.
The bill would provide 122 (b) billion dollars to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and includes language requiring that U-S soldiers begin leaving Iraq within 120 days of passage. The bill also sets a nonbinding goal of ending combat operations by March 31st, 2008.
The House passed a similar measure last week, and President Bush has vowed to veto the legislation because of the withdrawal schedule.
