Montgomery, AL – A House-passed bill to make it clearer who's financing Alabama campaigns got rewritten by a Senate committee Tuesday. The House's version of the bill would have banned all transfers between political action committees.
The version approved Tuesday by the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee would allow PACs to give to political parties, caucuses and get-out-the-vote groups.
Committee Chairman Wendell Mitchell says the House-passed version would not have passed the Senate, and changes were needed. Even with the changes, he says the bill will eliminate a lot of hidden money.
The bill's sponsor, state Representative Jeff McLaughlin, says the changes weaken the bill.
