Train Derails With NASA Cargo

By Associated Press

Demopolis, AL – Marengo County sheriff's investigators are working a train accident in the Myrtlewood community Wednesday.

The accident site is just south of Demopolis along Highway 114, not far from the Choctaw County line.

Officials with the state Emergency Management Agency says a railroad bridge collapsed, causing the train crash. At least six people were injured and two of the victims were taken by air ambulance to D-C-H Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. The nature of their injuries were not immediately known.

E-M-A reports the train was carrying a load for NASA and none of the cargo spilled.

NASA spokesman Allard Beutel in Washington, D.C., said the shipment of reusable solid rocket motors was en route from Utah to Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

He the accident should not delay any scheduled shuttle launches.

County officials are working to secure the site and clean up the wreckage. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the bridge to collapse.
