Controversy Over Ethics Hotline

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – Interim Chancellor Renee Culverhouse told school board members this week that a contract to install an ethics hot line for the two-year system will not be canceled as planned because problems with the agreement are being resolved.

Culverhouse sent the board an e-mail notifying them of the change after some members said they felt they had been mislead last month when Culverhouse told them she planned to cancel the contract because it had "major problems."

The Birmingham News reported in Wednesday's edition that Culverhouse sent the e-mail a day earlier after she was contacted by the paper.

Former interim Chancellor Thomas Corts suggested creating the hot line to allow the public and system employees to anonymously report problems in the system.

School board member Randy McKinney of Orange Beach said it appears some people in the department do not want an ethics hot line.
