Birmingham, AL – In an effort to cut spending, the Birmingham Board of Education voted Thursday afternoon to fire 397 employees.
The cuts will affect 234 certified employees, like teachers, librarians, counselors, principals and assistant principals, as well as 163 classified employees, such as nurses and transportation, cafeteria, clerical and custodial workers.
The vote passed six-to-one. Board member Virginia Volker cast the lone "no" vote.
The school system expects the cuts to save between 15 (m) million dollars and 16 (m) million dollars.
