Seat Belt Campaign is Underway

By Associated Press

Undated, AL – Better buckle up over the Memorial Day Holiday weekend. Alabama law enforcement agencies -- state, county and local officers -- are participating in the nationwide "Click It or Ticket" enforcement blitz.

The campaign started Monday and ends June third.

Colonel J- Christopher Murphy, Alabama's Public Safety Director, said about one-in-five Alabama drivers fail to buckle up.

Troopers estimate that 17 people may die in traffic accidents in Alabama over the 78-hour holiday travel period that begins Friday, May 25th at 6 p-m and ends at midnight Monday, May 28th.

Last year during the Memorial Day weekend, 13 people died in traffic accidents in Alabama.

Murphy also reminds motorists about the state's "move-over law." It requires vehicles on roads with four or more lanes move over one lane when passing an emergency vehicle that is stopped with its emergency lights activated. When the vehicle cannot safely move over, drivers are required to slow down and pass with caution.
