Pelham, AL – An Army sergeant from Pelham was among six soldiers killed in a roadside bombing in Iraq over the weekend.
The Defense Department said Tuesday that Army Sgt. Jean P. Medlin was among the six killed when the bomb exploded Saturday near their vehicle in western Baghdad. He was 27.
The Army identified the others killed as 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Christopher Moore of Alpaugh, California; 20-year-old Specialist David W. Behrle of Tipton, Iowa; 26-year-old Specialist Joseph A. Gilmore of Webster, Florida; 20-year-old Private First Class Travis F. Haslip of Ooltewah, Tennessee; and 19-year-old Private First Class Alexander R. Varela of Fernley, Nevada.
The six were serving with the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division based at Fort Hood, Texas.
