Muscle Shoals, AL – Former Muscle Shoals Mayor Charles Mitchell, whose career included staff positions with several U-S senators, died Saturday at Shoals Hospital. He was 79.
Best known for his work as mayor, Mitchell had served as an aide to the late U-S Senator Howell Heflin for about 14 years. He also worked in Washington for Alabama senators Lister Hill, James Allen and Maryon Allen.
Mitchell became Muscle Shoals' first mayor when it switched to a mayor-council form of government in 1992.
Mayor David Bradford ordered flags in the city to be flown at half-staff in honor of Mitchell.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
