Fairhope, AL – Five Republicans and one Democrat qualified for the special election to replace Republican Bradley Byrne in the Alabama Senate.
Qualifying for the District 32 seat ended Friday for the party primary.
The five Republicans are:
- Baldwin County Commissioner David Ed Bishop of Fairhope.
- State Board of Education member Randy McKinney of Gulf Shores.
- Daphne tractor dealer Lee ''Trip'' Pittman.
- Baldwin County Republican Party Chairman Don McGriff of Montrose, who previously served on a special state parole board.
- Former state senator and former agriculture commissioner candidate Albert Lipscomb of Magnolia Springs.
Former Prichard Mayor A-J Cooper, now a Fairhope attorney, was the lone Democrat to qualify.
If no Republican wins a majority in the August 7th primary, a runoff will be held September 11th. The winner will advance to the general election October 16th against Cooper. If there is no need for a Republican runoff, the general election will be September 11th.
Byrne, a two-term senator from Fairhope, resigned May 24th to become the state's two-year college counselor.
Senate District 32 covers most of Baldwin County.
